Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733)

  • Adams was the pilot of the Dutch ship "De Liefde" wrecked at the shores of Eastern Kyushu in 1600. He was never allowed to return home and taken into the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The title cartouche shows Adams during an audience with the shôgun, who, as the emperor of Japan is sitting on a fancyful throne.
