Antoine Gaubil, S.J. (1689-1759)

Gaubil, a French Jesuit and missionary was born in Gaillac. After joining the Society of Jesus in 1704 he was sent to China, where he arrived in 1722. Thenceforth he lived in Peking until his death. Gaubil was trained as a mathematician and astronomer. While teaching Latin and acting as interpreter in Russian affairs he conducted intensive research in astronomy and history.
